Don’t Buy New Furniture When You Can Choose Upholstery Near You

Many homeowners wrestle with the choice of splurging on new furniture or reviving the pieces they already love. Refreshing your cherished furnishings can transform a tired sofa into a stylish, comfortable centerpiece while preserving sentimental value and quality craftsmanship. Renewing your furniture not only breathes new life into your space but also serves as a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to replacing entire pieces. When you explore options like custom upholstery near you, you’ll find expert services that refine every detail—from superior foam to reinforced support structures—ensuring your furniture remains as functional as it is beautiful.

Give Your Favorite Furniture a Second Life

Every piece of furniture has a story. Whether it’s a sofa filled with family memories or an armchair that’s been your go-to spot for years, it doesn’t have to be replaced just because it looks a little tired. Upholstery gives these pieces a fresh start, preserving their sturdy frames and timeless designs while completely updating their look and feel.

Rather than spending money on entirely new furniture, reupholstery allows you to revamp what you already own. It’s a cost-effective solution that not only restores the fabric but also maintains the original quality and craftsmanship of your pieces, extending their life without the hefty expense of buying new items or settling for mass-produced furniture. Additionally, there’s a good chance the materials and craftsmanship in your original, older furniture is superior to what you may find in stores now.

An Eco-Friendly Choice That Makes a Difference

Sustainability matters now more than ever and opting for upholstery is an eco-friendly way to keep quality pieces out of landfills. Each year, countless articles of furniture are discarded, contributing to waste and environmental strain. Instead of adding to the problem, investing in upholstery near you helps reduce waste by repurposing existing pieces—keeping their sturdy frames and quality craftsmanship intact.

Buying new furniture also comes with hidden environmental costs—like extracting raw materials, energy-intensive production, and long-distance shipping. Upholstering your existing pieces means minimizing your carbon footprint while keeping beautifully crafted furniture in circulation.

The Unsung Heroes Beneath the Fabric

While most people think about fabric first, the real comfort of your furniture lies beneath the surface. Components like webbing, springs, foam, and support structures are essential to maintaining comfort and durability. New upholstery often involves upgrading these hidden elements, making sure your furniture not only looks great but feels as good as new.

Ignoring these inner components can mean an item will feel saggy or uncomfortable even after reupholstering. Investing in quality repairs ensures the entire structure is reinforced, making your furniture more resilient and enjoyable to use.

Make Your Space Uniquely Yours

One of the best parts of choosing new upholstery is the freedom to customize. Unlike mass-produced furniture with limited style options, upholstery services offer a wide range of high-quality fabrics and patterns to match your taste. Whether you’re looking for bold modern prints or classic, understated textures, you can create a look that feels personal and unique.

Your furniture should be as individual as you are, and new upholstery lets you make that vision a reality.

Why Custom Upholstery Matters in Home Design

Creating a home that truly reflects your personality and style involves many elements, but one of the most impactful choices you can make lies in your furniture. One way to customize your furniture is through new, professional-grade custom upholstery, which can breathe new life into your living space and offer a canvas for your creativity. Opting for new upholstery is about more than just covering furniture; it’s about crafting a look that resonates with your taste while enhancing the functionality of your pieces. In this article, we will explore the ins and outs of bespoke upholstery, including the benefits of working with a professional Denver upholstery shop.

Tailored Choices for Your Vision

The beauty of custom upholstery lies in the sheer variety of fabrics available. Whether you adore the luxurious feel of a velvet or the casual charm of a woven fabric, the possibilities are virtually limitless. You can select materials that not only align with your particular aesthetic but also suit the everyday needs of your household. Imagine a playful floral print for a kid-friendly space or a rich leather for a sophisticated study. Each fabric tells a story and contributes to the ambiance you wish to create.

Design Flexibility for Every Space

With personalized upholstery, the freedom to express your style is at your fingertips. You can play with colors, patterns, and textures in ways that wouldn’t be possible with off-the-shelf furniture. Have a vintage sofa that needs a refresh? You can select a bold, modern fabric that updates a cherished piece. Perhaps a classic armchair that you’ve had for years could shine with a new contemporary pattern or color. This flexibility means your home can evolve alongside your tastes, allowing for a dynamic environment that changes with you.

Quality You Can Trust

Choosing professional-grade upholstery tailored to meet your functional and aesthetic needs, means you are investing in quality. Many manufacturer options fall short when it comes to resilience and longevity. Custom professional-grade upholstery provides a chance to select durable fabrics that stand the test of time, ensuring your investment is worthwhile. You can pick materials that can hold up against everyday wear and tear, whether from pets, children, or simply life’s little messes. This quality not only preserves the appearance of your furniture but also contributes to its longevity.

Cleanability on Your Terms

Another noteworthy aspect of custom upholstery is the ability to select your preferred level and style of cleanability. This allows you to select fabrics that perfectly suit your lifestyle. If you have a busy household, you might prefer materials that are resistant to stains and easy to maintain. On the other hand, if you lean toward lighter fabrics, you can select those that offer easy cleaning options without sacrificing style. This ability to tailor cleanability means you can enjoy your furniture without the constant worry of upkeep.

Cherished Heirlooms Reimagined

Do you have furniture pieces that hold sentimental value? Perhaps they’ve been in your family for generations but no longer fit your décor. Custom upholstery gives you the chance to reimagine these cherished items. You can maintain their historical integrity while giving them a fresh look that complements your current style. This revitalization allows you to keep family history alive in a way that feels modern and fresh.

Unique Aesthetic That Speaks to You

Through custom fabrics, you have the opportunity to cultivate an aesthetic that is genuinely your own. Forget about the cookie-cutter styles that are easily found in mainstream stores. Instead, your home can feature pieces that reflect your unique sensibilities and preferences. It’s a chance to curate a space that feels like home—a place where every element resonates with who you are and what you love.

Every detail in your living space contributes to the overall atmosphere and experience. Selecting upholstery made for you allows you to fill your home with pieces that are not only beautiful but also functional and meaningful.

Internet Misconceptions About Upholstery Repair & Furniture Care

In the world of furniture care, misconceptions run rampant, especially when it comes to maintaining and repairing upholstery and wood pieces. Unfortunately, many of these beliefs stem from unverified sources on the internet. This article presents a more accurate understanding of how to care for your furniture by clarifying some of the most prevalent myths, from the false promise of upholstery repair to harmful home remedies.

The Illusion of Upholstery Repair

Perhaps the biggest misunderstanding is the notion that upholstery can be repaired. In reality, upholstery cannot be effectively restored once it has reached a certain point of wear and tear. The fibers and structures that make up upholstery deteriorate over time, losing their strength and aesthetic appeal. While you might see furniture shops offering upholstery repair near you, any attempt to fix damaged fabric typically leads to further complications and a less-than-ideal aesthetic

The bottom line is that when upholstery shows signs of damage—be it tears, fraying, or discoloration—replacement is the only effective solution.

Misguided Home Remedies

The internet is filled with DIY remedies that promise to clean or fix furniture using everyday items. However, many of these suggestions are not only ineffective but can also cause irreparable damage.

Mayonnaise and Other Common Kitchen Items

One of the most popular remedies suggested online involves using mayonnaise to tackle stains or restore sheen to wood furniture finishes. While mayonnaise may seem harmless, the oils found in this condiment can actually penetrate wood, attracting dirt and leading to dark spots over time. Plus, if you are using mayo on the wood section of an upholstered piece, some may get onto the fabric, leaving an oil stain. Instead of enhancing your furniture, mayonnaise can create more work and cost in the long run.

Hot Water Isn’t Always the Answer

While hot water can effectively remove soils and stains from most synthetic fabrics, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution that the internet may lead you to believe. For synthetic fabric, using hot water may lead to color bleeding and fabric distortion. To avoid damaging these delicate materials, opt for lukewarm water instead. This will help you clean effectively without risking the integrity and appearance of your upholstery. Always check fabric care labels for the best results.

Hot water can also be detrimental to finishes on wood furniture. It may cause the wood to swell, warp, or lose its sheen, resulting in an uneven appearance. Additionally, the heat can weaken adhesives used in joints, potentially leading to structural issues over time. When cleaning and caring for wood furniture, it’s best to use a damp cloth with cool or lukewarm water.

Toothpaste is a Double-Edged Sword

Another internet-fueled trend is the use of toothpaste to clean both upholstery and wood furniture; even sources like Better Homes & Gardens have pushed this myth.

Many people believe that toothpaste can provide a whitening effect akin to its use on teeth. However, the reality is that toothpaste often contains abrasives that can be detrimental to upholstery fibers and the finish on wood surfaces. While it may momentarily clean a spot, the risk of additional damage like scratches and frayed fabric makes this method more problematic than beneficial.

Acid Cleaners and Their Hidden Dangers

Acidic cleaners, such as orange oil, can be detrimental to wood furniture as well. While they might emit a nice aroma, their high pH can weaken glue around joints, compromising furniture stability. Additionally, the acidity can strip natural oils from the wood, leading to dryness and fading. It’s crucial to use gentle, pH-neutral products to maintain the integrity and appearance of your wooden pieces.

A product like Guardsman’s Wood Cleaner and Polish is the only product we recommend anyone use on wood furniture. Other options available tend to leave behind a waxy finish that can actually harm wood over time and can only be removed by refinishing the wood.

You Need More than a Needle & Thread to Fix Seams

We’ve already talked about the myth of upholstery repair, but many still believe they can tackle smaller repairs like split seams thanks to the many online guides. However, ripped seams can indicate the upholstery has also experienced a lot of wear and tear and needs to be replaced. This is particularly true if the fabric type is delicate, the piece has been heavily used, or the rip is extensive. While basic sewing might provide a temporary fix, it can compromise the fabric’s integrity and appearance in the long run.

Secrets to Long-Lasting Furniture Upholstery in Littleton

Upholstery often takes a beating over time, yet with some smart strategies and mindful practices, it’s possible to maintain the beauty and functionality of your favorite pieces for years to come. Understanding the right cleaning techniques, making informed fabric choices, and implementing simple maintenance tips can significantly enhance the longevity of your furniture upholstery in Littleton. Whether you’re dealing with everyday wear and tear or occasional spills, these insights will help you preserve the aesthetic appeal and extend the lifespan of your valued pieces. Let’s take a deeper dive into a few ways to help your upholstered furniture last longer.

Making Wise Fabric Choices

The foundation of long-lasting upholstery starts with selecting the right fabric. Before you settle on a material, consider the intended use and the people (and pets) who will be enjoying it. Some fabrics are more resistant to stains and wear than others, so take time to research accordingly.

When browsing options, think about the scale and size of patterns, and how they interact with the overall aesthetic of your space. Fabrics like microfiber and faux leather offer exceptional durability while blends like cotton-polyester can provide an ideal balance between comfort and resistance to wear and tear. Don’t overlook the importance of cleanability—some materials require a little more attention than others. Assess your lifestyle and make choices that align with your habits.

Vacuum Regularly

A simple yet effective way to maintain your upholstery is with regular vacuuming. Dust and dirt can build up over time, causing fibers to fray and colors to fade. Use a soft brush attachment on your vacuum to gently lift debris without damaging the fabric. Aim to vacuum at least once a week, or more often for frequently used furniture pieces. This small commitment goes a long way to preserve the texture and appearance of your upholstery.

Know Your Cleaning Codes

Most furniture comes with a cleaning code that provides valuable insights into proper cleaning techniques. These codes, typically found on tags or in product documentation, indicate the best cleaning methods for your upholstery. Familiarizing yourself with these codes ensures you’re using the right products and techniques. For instance, “W” indicates a fabric that can be cleaned with water-based solutions, while “S” denotes materials that require solvent-based cleaning agents. Carefully research the code for your upholstery to keep it in prime condition without risking damage.

Perform Regular Checks

Adding a regular check-up to your cleaning routine helps catch any potential issues early. Inspect upholstery for signs of wear like fraying edges, discoloration, or stains. If you notice any damage, address it promptly to avoid further deterioration. For instance, if a stain occurs, treat it as soon as possible, using the appropriate cleaning method for your specific fabric.

Limit Sun Exposure

Sunlight is known to cause fabrics to fade and weaken over time. To protect your upholstery, try limiting sun exposure by rearranging furniture or using window treatments, such as blinds or curtains. You should also consider placing larger furniture, like sofas, away from direct sunlight, or opt for UV-blocking window films. This not only helps preserve the color but also extends the fabric’s lifespan exponentially.

Arrange Thoughtfully

The arrangement of furniture can dramatically influence upholstery longevity. Avoid placing items too close together, as crowded settings can lead to friction and snagging. Leave enough space between pieces to allow for airflow and easier cleaning access.

Consider placing coasters or mats under objects that could scratch or stain. Simple additions like these can save you from dire cleaning situations later on.

Rotate Cushions and Covers

To prevent uneven wear and to make sure your upholstery looks great, rotate cushions and covers regularly. This simple habit helps distribute the effects of regular use more evenly across different sections. By mixing things up, you can combat sagging and maintain a fuller appearance. Additionally, if your furniture has removable covers, consider washing them from time to time according to the manufacturer’s instructions for a clean look.

Manage Household Activities

When pets or children are involved, domestic life can become chaotic. It’s wise to establish certain rules within your living spaces regarding snacking or playtime to protect your furniture upholstery in Littleton. For instance, create pet-free zones or designate areas where eating is permitted. Implementing boundaries can go a long way in avoiding stains, unnecessary wear, and fraying.

What to Consider with Furniture Upholstery Near You

Understand What Goes into an Upholstery Project

When it comes to upholstering a piece of furniture, there are several key considerations that go beyond just choosing the right fabric. Upholstery projects encompass a range of factors that impact the comfort, support, and overall functionality of your furniture. From repairs to frames and replacing old foam to repairing or replacing springs and webbing, each element plays an important role in ensuring your furniture looks and feels its best. Before jumping into a project with furniture upholstery services near you, keep these things in mind.

Different Types of Upholstery Projects

Before embarking on an upholstery project or the common mislabel “furniture reupholstery”, it’s important to understand the different types of projects that you may encounter. Whether you’re looking to repair a tear in your favorite armchair, completely revamp a vintage sofa, or create a new piece, each project comes with its own set of challenges and considerations. By familiarizing yourself with the various types of upholstery projects, you can better prepare for the task at hand. These are just some of the many types of upholstery projects beyond armchairs and sofas:

  • Headboards
  • Bar stools
  • Footstools or ottomans
  • Piano stools
  • Chairs with drop-in seats
  • Desk chairs

Choosing the Right Upholstery Fabric

Finding the ideal upholstery fabric is a crucial step in transforming your furniture into a show-stopping piece. The fabric you choose will determine the visual appeal, comfort, and longevity of your upholstery project. When selecting upholstery fabric, factors such as durability, color, and texture play a vital role in achieving the perfect look.

Consider the lush feel of velvet for a luxurious touch or opt for a sturdy performance fabric for high-traffic areas. Leather and faux leather offer comfort and elegance, while chenille provides a soft and cozy feel to upholstered pieces. You can even mix fabrics. Understanding the importance of selecting the right upholstery fabric ensures that your furniture not only looks stunning but also stands strong against everyday wear and tear. Choose a fabric that complements your lifestyle and home aesthetic, whether you prefer a bold pattern or a subtle solid color.

Repairs to Frames, Replacing Foam and Springs

When it comes to upholstery, the focus is often on the visible fabric of your furniture. However, it’s crucial to understand that the internal components play a significant role in the overall comfort and durability of your furniture.

Before any sewing begins, a skilled repair team meticulously inspects and repairs the frame to ensure its stability and strength. Furthermore, they meticulously re-tie springs, re-web, and utilize top-quality closed-cell foam, plush cotton padding, and other premium internal materials to guarantee enduring comfort. The attention to detail during these initial stages sets the foundation for furniture that doesn’t just look good but also stands the test of time, providing unmatched comfort for years to come.

Get Creative with Upholstery Details

With upholstery, unique touches such as diamond tufting, channel backs, and contrasting welts can truly enhance the appearance of your furniture whether you are creating a new upholstered piece or looking to replace upholstery and match details. Diamond tufting involves creating a pattern of geometrically spaced buttons or stitches on the upholstery, giving it a sophisticated look. Channel backs are vertical or horizontal channels sewn into the fabric, which can create a tailored and structured appearance. Contrasting welts, which are cords sewn along the seams of the upholstery, can add a pop of color or texture to the piece.

By incorporating these intricate details, you can customize your furniture and achieve a high-end, personalized style that reflects your unique taste, whether it is for a new piece or to replace existing upholstery. It is important to work closely with your upholstery expert to bring your vision to life and create a one-of-a-kind piece that showcases your individual flair, ensuring that the final result matches your desired look and details.

3 Reasons to reupholster your furniture.

Make Your Furniture Distinctly Yours

Most of us can agree our furniture is an important part of the spaces where we live and work.  If you’re anything like us, you want your space and furniture to be just right.  You might call this the Goldilocks approach.  One way to get furniture that’s just right for you, is to reupholster it  for a custom look that suits your unique needs and taste.

3 reasons to reupholster

  1. You can create a custom look.  It’s your space, make it look however you want.  With thousands of fabrics to choose from, there’s a fabric that will fit your style and budget perfectly.
  2. You get the fit and feel you want.  Beyond new fabric, many upholstery jobs require new foam, springs or repairs to the frame.  The benefit is that you can choose the internal materials to fit your specific needs.  If you want your sofa to feel a little more firm, or you’d like to upgrade to down and feather in your cushions, you can do that.  You can specify highly durable and cleanable materials and enjoy the final product for years to come.
  3. You can trust the craftsmanship.  Even as little as ten years ago, the build quality of upholstered pieces was higher than it is today.  The cost to manufacture furniture goes up year over year.  Businesses that build furniture want to keep the retail cost at roughly the same level as it was the previous year. Which means the quality of the furniture must suffer.  Upholstering an older sofa or chair means you can maintain the high quality of older manufacturing techniques with a new look and today’s higher quality fabric choices. Seems like a win-win to us.

Bonus!

Reupholstery is a sustainable option.

Choosing to reupholster your existing furniture means you’ll get the look and quality you want with less of an impact on the environment.  New furniture needs to be manufactured and shipped, which can take a toll on the environment and contribute to global concerns including deforestation and pollution.  Plus, even furniture that goes on to a second life elsewhere will most likely end up in a landfill at some point due to a lack of long-term durability.  According to the EPA, Americans put approximately 9 million tons of furniture into area landfills in 2018 alone.

4 Tips for Selecting Upholstery

Custom upholstery isn’t just for interior designers.

Deciding to reupholster your furniture can be exciting. New upholstery is a great way to update the look of your space. And, if you have beloved piece of furniture, selecting new upholstery can breath new life into an old piece.

When you decide to reupholster your furniture, it’s important to work with an experienced and reputable company. Experienced craftsmen can help you achieve the finished look you want. They can also make sure the materials hidden beneath the new fabric are in proper working order. Whether you’re reupholstering multiple pieces of furniture or a single chair, there are four key considerations to keep in mind.

4 tips for selecting upholstery that’s right for your furniture.

achieve the look you want

Chances are you’re considering reupholstery because your current fabric is damaged or isn’t quite the look you want. If you’re a design enthusiast, you may know the exact style, pattern, or color you want in a new upholstery. If however, you’re not quite sure, a good upholstery shop will be able to help you with selecting upholstery that’s right for your project. In our showroom, we carry thousands of fabrics in an array of colors, patterns, and styles.

Upholstery fabric often coexists with other finishes including paint, flooring, window coverings, lighting, and other furniture. Before you order a fabric, consider seeing how fabrics you like look in your actual space. Some upholstery shops will allow you to check out fabric books. This allows you to see if your fabric choice will give you the finished look you want in your space before you place an order.

When it comes to a finished look, pattern is often the most challenging part of selecting upholstery. From size, color or colors and complexity, pattern presents endless options.  Keep in mind too that, the size, scale, and shape of your furniture will impact how a pattern looks. From a small stripe to a large floral, or an animal print, aim to have your upholstery patterns compliment one another to create a cohesive and professional look.

Tips for selecting upholstery in Denver

We carry thousands of fabrics in an array of colors, patterns, and styles.

DURABILITY & QUALITY

When it comes to selecting upholstery there are countless options available. Whether you’re reupholstering kitchen stools or a rarely used decorative piece, there’s likely a fabric to meet your needs.

Today’s fabric mills are producing state of the art materials. Options include new fibers designed for durability, as well as natural fibers like cotton and silks, and a host of fabric blends. The quality of a fabric is determined by how tightly the fibers of the fabric are woven as well as design details such as embroidery. Price does not necessarily equate to quality or durability. Some of the least expensive nylon or acrylic blends can have the best wearability. These same fabrics, however can often have a very commercial look and feel.

Double rubs are how fabric manufacturers rate the wearability of a fabric. These fabrics are tested using a machine at the mill or at an independent testing facility.  The fabric is pulled taught in the machine and rubbed across both directions with cotton duck or canvas.  Each pass is counted as a double rub and the testing is halted when the fabric shows abrasion or the testing tops 100,000 double rubs.

We recommend choosing a fabric with at least 30,000 double rubs to guarantee long life and enjoyment of your furniture.

CARE & CLEANING

Caring for and cleaning upholstery fabrics is different from many of the fabrics in our daily lives. For instance, if a spill happens during dinner, you can’t spray on a little stain remover, throw the chair in the wash and call it good.

All the upholstery fabrics we carry, come with a cleaning code from the mill where the fabric was manufactured. Thankfully the same code is used across manufacturers. This code is meant to help consumers understand how to properly care for their upholstery on a routine basis, as well as what to do in the case of an accident. The code is as follows:

W – Use only a water based upholstery cleaner.

S – Use only a solvent based upholstery cleaner.

SW – Use a water based or solvent based cleaner.

X – Do not clean with either water base or solvent based cleaners; use only vacuuming or light brushing.

If your upholstery does require spot cleaning, keep these 3 things in mind:

  1. Avoid over-wetting the stain area. Applying too much moisture to the outside fabric can have adverse effects on the internal filling including the foam, feathers or webbing.
  1. Always dab, never rub a stain. Rubbing the stain can actually push the stain further into the fabric fibers and degrade the integrity of the fibers.
  1. Don’t remove zippered covers, unless the manufacturer’s label suggests doing so. Most zippered covers should not be removed for cleaning as excessive shrinkage may occur; zippers are used to facilitate the filling and closing of cushions, not necessarily the cleaning of fabric.

When in doubt, we recommend calling a professional upholstery cleaner. They have commercial-grade cleaning supplies, tools and manufacturer training.polyester

COST RANGE

Last but certainly not least, and often the most important consideration, the cost of upholstery fabric can range from $35/yd – $300/yd. The average price range for a good quality fabric is about $65/yd – $110/yd.

There are countless upholstery fabric options available but not all fabrics are the same. Many discount fabrics include flaws that even a master upholsterer can’t work around. We recommend if you purchase discount fabric that you examine every square inch before deciding to proceed with your upholstery project.

Selecting custom upholstery can be fun and exciting.

Before choosing a fabric, it’s important to know your desired finished look and  how and where your furniture will be used. We have thousands of upholstery-grade fabrics available in a range of prices. We carry fabrics from manufacturers including Kravet, JF Fabrics, Stinson, Duralee, Greenhouse and more. Our team can assist you with fabric selections and even coordinate with other design elements in your space. When you’re ready to begin your upholstery project, schedule an appointment to visit our showroom or you can request an estimate.
