Alligatoring and Surface Checking in Furniture Refinishing

Over years of use, the protective coatings on wood can develop cracking patterns that mar both beauty and function. In the world of furniture refinishing, two terms often come up: alligatoring and surface checking. Though both manifest as networks of fractures, each reveals a distinct failure in the finish. By recognizing their unique signatures, understanding what provokes them, and appreciating how professional restoration delivers decades of renewed appearance, owners can feel confident their heirlooms will endure.

When the Finish Becomes Reptilian: Alligatoring

Alligatoring looks just as it sounds: broad, plate-like fragments of finish separated by raised ridges, much like an alligator’s hide. You’ll often spot it where multiple finish layers have built up—on tabletops, raised panels, or carved details. As time passes, resins in shellac, lacquer, and varnish harden and lose flexibility. Exposure to UV light and heat can intensify this embrittlement, while trapped moisture from previous applications can create internal stress. Left unchecked, the cracked plates may lift, exposing raw wood to stains, mildew, and accelerated wear.

Visually, alligatoring can range from fine fissures to palm-sized patches of peeling. Under raking light, the depth and pattern become dramatic, revealing how layers have separated over decades. Allowing this condition to persist risks not only the finish itself but also the wood beneath.

Delicate Cracks in Detail: Surface Checking

Surface checking is far subtler: a web of hairline cracks confined to the outermost finish layer. These micro-fractures usually trace the wood grain and show up first on thin-finish edges—drawer fronts, door surrounds, or spindles. When light grazes the surface, the delicate network becomes visible, like a spiderweb suspended over the wood.

This pattern springs from natural movement in the substrate. Seasonal swings—humid summers followed by dry winters—cause wood to swell and shrink. A brittle coating, especially older lacquers or shellacs, can’t flex rapidly enough, resulting in surface-level fissures. Though less alarming than alligatoring, unaddressed surface checking can trap moisture and grime in the cracks, leading to permanent discoloration.

Shared Triggers: Why Finishes Fail

Both alligatoring and surface checking stem from similar environmental stressors that undermine finish longevity:

  • Aging Coatings: Loss of plasticizers hardens resins over time.
  • Moisture Swings: Expansion and contraction of wood stresses brittle layers.
  • Heat & UV Exposure: Sunlight catalyzes chemical breakdown.
  • Incompatible Overcoats: Mismatched products cure at different rates, inducing internal tension.

Recognizing these culprits helps explain why professional interventions are designed not only to restore appearance but also to resist future damage.

Choose Professional Wood Furniture Refinishing Near You for Enduring Beauty

Specialized furniture refinishing services focus on outcomes that last for decades rather than just patching visible damage. Real craftsmen combine climate-controlled application environments with high-performance sealers and UV-blocking topcoats, locking in protection against the very stressors that lead to alligatoring and surface checking. When steps are skipped or drying times are cut short, the finish is more likely to break down over time.

Extended Finish Lifespan

Advanced materials are selected for their long-term elasticity and resistance to ultraviolet breakdown. This means a repaired finish not only looks seamless but also remains pliable enough to flex with seasonal wood movement.

Moisture and Stain Resistance

Premium sealers penetrate the grain, creating a barrier that shields wood from moisture ingress and tannin bleed—two factors that can accelerate crack formation and discoloration.

Consistent Appearance

Through controlled film builds and precision spraying or brushing, the finish maintains uniform sheen and texture, hiding previous fractures while delivering a smooth surface that repels dirt and oils.

Minimized Maintenance

A well-executed professional restoration reduces the need for frequent touch-ups. With quality UV filters and moisture barriers, furniture can endure bright sunlight and daily use with fewer signs of aging.

Experts focus on these outcome-driven benefits—longer lifespan, improved resistance, and sustained aesthetics—to help owners preserve their investment and minimize future interventions.

Experience Quality with Our Furniture Refinishing Near You

Furniture refinishing is an art form that not only restores beloved pieces but also adds a unique touch that reflects personal style. Here at Ackerman & Sons, we embrace the intricate process of transforming furniture with tailored techniques, offering expert furniture refinishing near you. Each piece we touch tells its own story, and we aim to enhance that narrative while ensuring its longevity. Join us as we delve into the journey of refinishing, from the initial assessment to the finishing touches.

Initial Assessment: The Heart of the Process

The process of refinishing begins with a thorough evaluation of the piece. Our estimators examine the furniture for its structural integrity and aesthetic features. This includes assessing the type of wood, existing finish, and any existing damage such as scratches, dents, or missing pieces including veneer and hardware. Understanding the history of the item is crucial; factors like age and prior restoration efforts influence our approach. This initial assessment sets the stage for the treatment your furniture will receive. It’s essential to develop a custom plan that respects the piece’s character while addressing its needs.

Stripping for Restoration: A Methodical Approach

Once the assessment is complete, we move to the stripping stage. This critical phase involves removing the old finish, whether it’s paint, varnish, or polyurethane. The technique we employ depends on the original application style and the condition of the furniture. Unlike some other workshops, we don’t sand old finish and then cover it up with a new finish, since this doesn’t allow the finish to adhere correctly, and it won’t protect the wood. We hand-strip every piece, which helps maintain the integrity of the wood grain, structure of the piece, and allow for thorough preparation of the wood. We also do any repairs to the piece before beginning to apply the new finish. This careful removal of the old finish lays the groundwork for a flawless new application that will protect and beautify the wood.

Repair and Restoration: Bringing Integrity Back

With the old finish removed, it’s time for necessary repairs and preparation. Here, we address any imperfections that may have been hidden beneath the surface. Wood filler is often used to fill in scratches or holes, and careful sanding smooths out rough areas. Once repairs are complete, our craftsmen meticulously inspect the piece to confirm it meets our high standards. Any joints that may be loose can be tightened or re-glued, ensuring that the furniture remains sturdy and functional. This attention to detail improves the overall durability of the piece, allowing it to withstand the rigors of daily use.

Choosing the Perfect Stain or Finish: Personalization at Its Best

One of the most exciting aspects of furniture refinishing is the opportunity for personalization. Our clients can choose from a variety of stains and finishes that align with their aesthetic preferences. Whether opting for a clear finish that highlights the natural grain of the wood, or a bold stain that introduces a contemporary flare, the options are endless. We guide our clients through this decision-making process, presenting samples and discussing the effects of different colors and finishes. Properly applied finishes are essential, as they protect wood from environmental factors such as moisture and UV light.

Application: The Art of Finishing Touches

With all the preparatory work complete, it’s time to apply the chosen stain or finish. Our craftsmen employ a range of techniques that may include brushing, spraying, or wiping to achieve even application. Each method has its advantages, and we utilize the technique best suited to the specific wood and desired look. After application, pieces are allowed to properly dry and cure, ensuring a durable bond between the finish and the wood. This step is important; a hurried process can result in uneven surfaces or premature wear. A professionally applied finish also shields the wood from cracking, drying out, and shrinking, preserving its integrity for years to come.

Final Inspection and Delivery: Ensuring Satisfaction

The final phase of our refinishing journey involves a thorough inspection of the completed piece. Our team examines every detail, ensuring that the finish is flawless and that all repairs are seamlessly integrated. Once approved, we carefully prepare the furniture for delivery. Our goal is to have clients not just satisfied but truly delighted with their refreshed furniture. Each piece should evoke pride and joy, serving as a centerpiece in homes or offices for years to come.

The Climate’s Effect on Wood Furniture Repair and Maintenance

When choosing wood furniture, many are focused on its visual appeal and the quality of workmanship. Yet, an equally important aspect to consider is the significant impact that climate has on the durability and resilience of wood pieces. In areas like Colorado, known for its harsh sunlight, fluctuating humidity, and drastic temperature changes, recognizing how these factors affect wood furniture is vital for ensuring its longevity. Additionally, being aware of wood furniture repair options can help address any issues that arise from environmental stressors, further extending the lifespan of your pieces.

Colorado’s Unique Climate

Colorado’s breathtaking landscapes come with a distinct and diverse climate that poses unique challenges for wood furniture. The state’s high altitude and varying environments can create conditions that require special considerations and care for wooden pieces.

Sun Exposure and UV Radiation

One of the most significant factors impacting wood furniture in Colorado is the elevated UV radiation due to its high elevation, with many places situated above 5,000 feet. For every 1,000 feet, UV exposure increases by 8-10%, so many areas in the state are at risk of accelerated fading and discoloration in their wood furniture finishes. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause protective finishes—such as varnishes and stains—to break down, resulting in a chalky appearance. Furthermore, certain hardwoods—like oak and cherry—can become brittle and prone to splitting under such intense sunlight.

Effects of Low Humidity

Colorado’s semi-arid climate results in low humidity levels, especially during winter months when central heating is in heavy use. The relative humidity can drop below 20%, causing wood to lose moisture rapidly. This results in physical changes like shrinkage, surface checking, and warping. Wood’s cellular structure, which relies on a certain moisture content to maintain its shape, can cause significant alterations in both aesthetics and durability.

Temperature Fluctuations

Frequent temperature variations also impact wood furniture in Colorado rooms and homes. The temperature can regularly swing dramatically between day and night, particularly in mountainous regions. As temperatures fluctuate, wood expands when heated and contracts when cooled. This constant cycle can weaken joints and adhesives, leading to structural problems over time. Untreated joints may become loose, and glue seams can fail, which compromises the furniture’s longevity.

Acclimating Furniture from Humid Climates

For homeowners transitioning wood furniture from more humid environments to Colorado, careful acclimatization practices are paramount for preserving the integrity and visual appeal of the pieces. This is true for historic pieces and new pieces that originated in warm, humid climates.

Monitoring Humidity Levels

Investing in a hygrometer is an excellent way to keep track of indoor humidity levels, which is a great way to protect wood furniture. Ideally, wood preservation requires maintaining a relative humidity range of 30-50%. During dry months, utilizing a humidifier can play a key role in stabilizing humidity levels within your home. This proactive approach not only helps to mitigate potential damage from excessive dryness but also safeguards the sturdiness and aesthetics of your wooden pieces.

Consistent Maintenance and Professional Care

Maintaining wood furniture is essential for preserving its appearance and structural integrity, especially in Colorado’s challenging climate. Regular maintenance practices, such as gentle dusting with a lightly damp cloth and the use of suitable cleaning products, help sustain the finish. Cleaning products shouldn’t leave behind a waxy finish. Additionally, applying a wood conditioner periodically replenishes moisture and creates a protective barrier against environmental elements. However, it is equally important to recognize when assistance from a craftsman is needed. If your wood furniture starts to show signs of deterioration—such as substantial scratches, fading, or structural damage—it’s wise to consult professional wood furniture experts.

When to Seek Professional Wood Furniture Repair & Refinishing

While minor issues can often be resolved on your own, serious concerns, such as deep fissures or severe structural problems, typically require skilled wood furniture repair and refinishing services.

When faced with serious issues like significant warping, deep cracks, or compromised structural strength, contacting our craftsmen is highly advised. Our specialized skills, knowledge of materials, and access to advanced repair tools and techniques can restore your furniture effectively. This ensures the pieces are resilient against Colorado’s climatic challenges.

Internet Misconceptions About Upholstery Repair & Furniture Care

In the world of furniture care, misconceptions run rampant, especially when it comes to maintaining and repairing upholstery and wood pieces. Unfortunately, many of these beliefs stem from unverified sources on the internet. This article presents a more accurate understanding of how to care for your furniture by clarifying some of the most prevalent myths, from the false promise of upholstery repair to harmful home remedies.

The Illusion of Upholstery Repair

Perhaps the biggest misunderstanding is the notion that upholstery can be repaired. In reality, upholstery cannot be effectively restored once it has reached a certain point of wear and tear. The fibers and structures that make up upholstery deteriorate over time, losing their strength and aesthetic appeal. While you might see furniture shops offering upholstery repair near you, any attempt to fix damaged fabric typically leads to further complications and a less-than-ideal aesthetic

The bottom line is that when upholstery shows signs of damage—be it tears, fraying, or discoloration—replacement is the only effective solution.

Misguided Home Remedies

The internet is filled with DIY remedies that promise to clean or fix furniture using everyday items. However, many of these suggestions are not only ineffective but can also cause irreparable damage.

Mayonnaise and Other Common Kitchen Items

One of the most popular remedies suggested online involves using mayonnaise to tackle stains or restore sheen to wood furniture finishes. While mayonnaise may seem harmless, the oils found in this condiment can actually penetrate wood, attracting dirt and leading to dark spots over time. Plus, if you are using mayo on the wood section of an upholstered piece, some may get onto the fabric, leaving an oil stain. Instead of enhancing your furniture, mayonnaise can create more work and cost in the long run.

Hot Water Isn’t Always the Answer

While hot water can effectively remove soils and stains from most synthetic fabrics, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution that the internet may lead you to believe. For synthetic fabric, using hot water may lead to color bleeding and fabric distortion. To avoid damaging these delicate materials, opt for lukewarm water instead. This will help you clean effectively without risking the integrity and appearance of your upholstery. Always check fabric care labels for the best results.

Hot water can also be detrimental to finishes on wood furniture. It may cause the wood to swell, warp, or lose its sheen, resulting in an uneven appearance. Additionally, the heat can weaken adhesives used in joints, potentially leading to structural issues over time. When cleaning and caring for wood furniture, it’s best to use a damp cloth with cool or lukewarm water.

Toothpaste is a Double-Edged Sword

Another internet-fueled trend is the use of toothpaste to clean both upholstery and wood furniture; even sources like Better Homes & Gardens have pushed this myth.

Many people believe that toothpaste can provide a whitening effect akin to its use on teeth. However, the reality is that toothpaste often contains abrasives that can be detrimental to upholstery fibers and the finish on wood surfaces. While it may momentarily clean a spot, the risk of additional damage like scratches and frayed fabric makes this method more problematic than beneficial.

Acid Cleaners and Their Hidden Dangers

Acidic cleaners, such as orange oil, can be detrimental to wood furniture as well. While they might emit a nice aroma, their high pH can weaken glue around joints, compromising furniture stability. Additionally, the acidity can strip natural oils from the wood, leading to dryness and fading. It’s crucial to use gentle, pH-neutral products to maintain the integrity and appearance of your wooden pieces.

A product like Guardsman’s Wood Cleaner and Polish is the only product we recommend anyone use on wood furniture. Other options available tend to leave behind a waxy finish that can actually harm wood over time and can only be removed by refinishing the wood.

You Need More than a Needle & Thread to Fix Seams

We’ve already talked about the myth of upholstery repair, but many still believe they can tackle smaller repairs like split seams thanks to the many online guides. However, ripped seams can indicate the upholstery has also experienced a lot of wear and tear and needs to be replaced. This is particularly true if the fabric type is delicate, the piece has been heavily used, or the rip is extensive. While basic sewing might provide a temporary fix, it can compromise the fabric’s integrity and appearance in the long run.

Preserving Heirloom Furniture: Restoration vs. Refinishing

If you’ve ever inherited a beautiful piece of antique furniture from a loved one or stumbled upon a treasure at a thrift store that you want to pass down, you know the value of a well-crafted piece. In today’s world of mass-produced furniture, heirloom pieces hold a special place in our hearts and homes. But with age and wear, these cherished pieces may be in need of some tender loving care from professional heirloom furniture restoration or refinishing services.

Refinishing involves removing the original finish with chemicals, while restoration focuses on maintaining the original finish through gentle cleaning. Understanding these differences is crucial, as each approach has distinct goals and outcomes. Let’s explore both options to help you decide the best path for your heirloom furniture.

What's the Difference Between Refinish & Restoration

Heirloom furniture serves as a connection to our past, making its care especially important. As you consider how to preserve these valuable pieces, it’s essential to distinguish between refinishing and restoration. Each method offers a unique approach and outcome, allowing you to choose the best option for rejuvenating your heirloom furniture.

Refinishing

Refinishing is a more intensive treatment of the furniture, where experienced craftsmen carefully remove the existing finish using chemicals like solvents, acetone, toluene, methanol, and benzyl alcohol. At Ackerman’s, we strip furniture by hand rather than dip-stripping, which can damage the integrity of the wood. This process often aims to prepare the surface for a new finish, which can include staining, sealing, and applying protective coatings.

The refinishing process typically begins with a thorough cleaning of the furniture to remove any dirt or oils. Next, the old finish is stripped away, followed by sanding to smooth out the surface and any imperfections. When necessary, repairs are made after stripping to remedy dents, missing decorative elements or veneers, breaks, cracks, and more. After sanding, craftsmen will apply stain, paint, or glaze to create the desired finished look. Finally, finishing touches such as sealants or varnishes are applied for protection, durability, and a polished appearance. This meticulous approach results in beautifully refinished furniture that looks good as new.

Refinishing offers an exciting opportunity to transform a piece that has seen better days. While it effectively restores worn or damaged furniture to a like-new condition, At Ackerman’s, we take it a step further by allowing you to redefine your piece according to your unique style. Whether you’re looking for a new color, a sleek sheen, or even a completely custom finish, our services cater to your vision. We provide options beyond the standard selections, including color matching and glazing techniques, making us a top choice for designers, architects, and commercial clients seeking that perfect signature look. With our expertise, your furniture can reflect your personal aesthetic rather than just its original charm.

Restoration

Heirloom furniture restoration is a comprehensive process aimed at returning furniture to its original state while preserving its unique characteristics. This process often includes replacing missing veneer, repairing intricate carvings, or recreating hand-painted finishes, ensuring that the piece retains its authenticity and historical value. Craftsmen employ traditional woodworking techniques and materials to maintain the integrity of the original aesthetic.

A key aspect of restoration is the focus on the original finish. Craftsmen will oftentimes gently clean the surface without altering the existing finish, allowing the piece to retain its original color and luster.

The aim of restoration is to revitalize heirloom furniture, enhancing its beauty and functionality while respecting its historical significance and character.

The Importance of Doing It Right

Mastering the arts of heirloom furniture refinishing and restoration requires a touch of finesse and a world of knowledge. Improper techniques or shortcuts can not only diminish the value of the furniture but also cause irreversible damage. By choosing professionals who specialize in refinishing and restoration for heirloom furniture, you can have peace of mind that your special pieces are in good hands. Their knowledge, skills, and attention to detail ensure that the refinishing or restoration process is carried out with the utmost care and respect for the craftsmanship of the original piece.

Preserving the Past for the Future

Heirloom furniture holds a significant value beyond its monetary worth. These pieces often carry sentimental value, memories, and stories that have been passed down through generations. By investing in heirloom furniture refinishing or restoration, you are not only saving a piece of history but also honoring the craftsmanship and legacy of the past.

Revitalizing heirloom furniture allows you to enjoy these timeless pieces in your everyday life while maintaining their cultural and historical significance. It’s a way to create a tangible connection to your heritage and roots, bridging the gap between the past and present.

Trust Ackerman & Sons with Your Heirloom Furniture

Looking for Furniture Refinishing Near You? Find an Expert.

How to determine if refinishing is right for your furniture.

Have you ever looked at a piece of furniture in your home and wondered if it could be refinished? If so, you’re not alone. Many of us have inherited or invested in high-end or antique furniture. Whether from years of use or changes in climate due to moves or even water damage, some pieces may have seen better days. But the question remains – is professionally refinishing these items worth the time, effort, and cost? In this blog, we’ll explore the ins and outs of furniture refinishing near you, how to determine if your pieces could benefit from a makeover, and why professional refinishing is a worthwhile endeavor for those looking to preserve the beauty and value of their furniture.

The Art of Furniture Refinishing

Refinishing wood furniture is a multi-step process that includes stripping the old finish, prepping the surface of the wood and applying a new finish. Finish is applied to help protect the wood and create an aesthetic that works for your taste and style. During the refinishing process, we opt to hand-strip furniture, which helps protect the integrity of the wood. Once the old finish is removed, we can make any necessary repairs. We can also preserve any markings or scarring in the wood that may have sentimental significance. At Ackerman & Sons, our expert refinishing team can create custom finish colors and color-match other pieces of furniture within your space.

Signs Your Furniture Needs Refinishing

While wear and tear are generally the most common sign that your furniture needs refinishing, there are multiple other indicators that you should look out for. Here are some key signs that your pieces may benefit from a professional makeover:

  1. Fading Color: Over time, exposure to sunlight and other environmental factors can cause the color of your furniture to fade. If you notice a significant change in the color of your furniture, refinishing may be necessary to restore its original vibrancy.
  2. Water or Heat Damage: Water stains, cloudiness in the finish, and discoloration are common issues with wooden furniture. The best way to remedy either situation is to find a professional wood furniture refinishing expert near you.
  3. Worn Finish: If the finish on your furniture is worn or peeling, it may be time for refinishing. A fresh coat of finish can protect the wood and enhance its natural beauty.
  4. Structural Issues: In addition to cosmetic issues, structural issues such as loose joints or wobbly legs can also be addressed when refinishing. A skilled furniture refinisher can repair these issues and ensure that your furniture is sturdy and stable.
  5. Climatic Damage: Just like our skin, Colorado’s climate can be hard on wood furniture. From cracking to fading, Colorado’s dry, cold and hot climate can make refinishing a must to protect the integrity of beauty of your wood furniture.

Why Should You Refinish Your Pieces?

Now that you are aware of the signs that indicate you may need wood furniture refinishing near you, you may be wondering whether it is worth the investment and when to pull the trigger. Here are some factors to consider when determining if your furniture deserves refinishing:

Sentimental Value

If your furniture holds sentimental value or is a cherished heirloom that has been treasured through generations, investing in professional refinishing is a wonderful way to honor its history and ensure its legacy lives on for years to come. By restoring and refreshing these pieces, you are not only preserving memories but also maintaining a connection to the past, creating a bridge between the generations that have loved and used these priceless pieces. Seeking out wood tables and furniture refinishing near you allows you to breathe new life into these pieces, from simple wood tables to antique bedroom sets, keeping them functional and beautiful while maintaining their sentimental significance.

Quality of Construction

When it comes to quality or antique furniture, the caliber of construction and materials used are paramount. Most new furniture today uses sub-par materials and is poorly built in a way that replacing oftentimes makes more sense, however, there are some manufacturers who rely on craftsmanship and use of top-notch materials, making them truly stand out. Refinishing these treasures not only restores their beauty but also preserves their integrity for generations to come. By taking the time and effort to refinish these pieces, you are ensuring that they will continue to be cherished and admired for their unique craftsmanship and timeless elegance.

Aesthetics

Restoration or Refinishing? What’s the difference and why it matters.

Not all wood furniture is created equal.

Depending on the age, value and desired final look, you may decide you want to restore or refinish your piece of furniture. In some cases, it can be nearly unthinkable to refinish a piece of truly antique furniture. Knowing the right direction to take, can keep you from making an unfixable mistake – not to mention save you thousands of dollars.

Some old wood furniture truly deserves to be protected, while other pieces can easily be updated for a more modern or custom look. Talking with an expert can help make sure you make the right decision before work begins.

Let’s talk about the two different approaches and reasons to do both.

Refinishing

For a look that’s renewed, refreshed or totally new.

Refinishing involves removing the old finish and replacing it with a new finish, which can be a lacquer, stain or a paint. Often you can significantly change the look of a piece with refinishing – going from light to dark or vice versa and even highlighting the grain of the wood more or less.

Paint or colored stains

If you’re looking to make a significant change to your wood furniture, consider using a colored stain or paint. These options provide countless ways to customize your finished look.

Restoration

When you want to protect the original finish.

Restoration is a process of  working with the original finish to bring out the beauty of the piece. Typically a less invasive process, restoration is idea for pieces with true historic value or significance. Restoring a piece, our craftsmen work with the existing materials vs. removing the current stain to replace with a new stain as they’ll do during refinishing.

A quality finish starts with the right foundation.

At Ackerman & Sons we use a catalyzed lacquer that is a very dense finish, with molecules that bond to each other in such a way as to prevent penetration by water and chemicals for up to 2.5X longer than a standard lacquer. The particular product we use is one of the few lacquers that meets or exceeds the Kitchen and Bath Association standards for moisture resistance.

Even the densest finish requires proper maintenance and care to deliver years of beauty and functionality.

Caring for Wood Furniture

5 Tips to keep your wood furniture looking its best.

Whether your piece was crafted in 1820, 1920, or 2020 – there are general guidelines for caring for your wood furniture to ensure it maintains its original beauty, luster, and functionality – not to mention value.

1.  In general, we recommend cleaning your wood furniture weekly with a clean, slightly damp cloth. After dusting or cleaning, immediately wipe any excess liquid from your wood surfaces. Today’s finishes are resistant but not waterproof.

2.  Furniture polish should be used sparingly. Many commercial items claim to clean and protect wood furniture but often end up coating the finish with a waxy residue that can actually build up and damage a finish. If you are going to use a furniture polish be sure to select one that is silicone free and will not build up on top of your finish.

3.  On occasion you may find excess dirt or grease on surfaces such as dining chairs, butcher blocks, kitchen tables, etc. Be careful cleaning these areas, especially if the finish is older as it may have softened. It’s best to use only a small amount of furniture cleaner, mild soap or, our favorite, mineral spirits and clean very lightly so you don’t disturb or remove the finish.

4.  If joinery, legs, dowels, braces, etc. become loose, have them professionally repaired to ensure the correct technique is used based on the issue and age of the furniture.

5.  A table pad set can also be used to protect a table pad from damage while entertaining.

Colorado’s extreme climate can be hard on your wood furniture.

climate, location, and your wood furniture.

Humidity matters

Wood is porous so changes in humidity levels can impact the strength and functionality. If you are moving an antique piece from a climate that has a high humidity level to an area with a low humidity level, there are some precautions you may want to take. If the interior drawers, back panels and inside case of a piece lacks a finish, shellac or varnish those areas. Be careful not to get anything on the original finish. This will prevent the item from losing its moisture rapidly in only certain areas, and help keep it from cracking or splitting as it climatizes. As soon as it reaches its destination, humidify the room the piece is in, and gradually decrease the humidity level.

In Colorado, we recommend trying to keep the humidity level in your home above 30% if possible. Large plants in pots placed on 3 to 4 inch deep trays filled with rocks and water act as natural humidifiers. If you use portable humidifiers, be very careful that the water does not condense on nearby wood surfaces.

With proper maintenance, lacquer finishes can last a very long time.
